How to archive and unarchive Instagram posts

If an Instagram post no longer fits your profile, you do not have to delete it. Instagram's archive feature lets you hide a post from everyone else while keeping the post, caption, likes, comments, and original publication date attached to your account.

You can restore an archived post later, and Instagram will put it back in its original position on your profile. Archiving is therefore usually the better choice when you are cleaning up your grid, rebranding an account, hiding an expired promotion, or simply unsure whether you want to remove something permanently.

This guide explains how to archive and unarchive individual Instagram posts, how to archive multiple posts at once, where archived content goes, and what changes when you restore it.

What happens when you archive an Instagram post?

Section titled: What happens when you archive an Instagram post?

Archiving makes a post private without deleting it. Once you archive a feed post:

  • It disappears from your profile grid.
  • Other people can no longer open, like, comment on, or share it from your profile.
  • Its existing likes and comments remain saved.
  • Its caption, tags, location, and original posting date remain attached.
  • Only you can see it in your Instagram archive.
  • Instagram does not notify your followers.
  • You can restore it to your profile whenever you want.

The post does not move into drafts or your phone's camera roll. It remains published content associated with your Instagram account, but it is hidden inside a private section of the app.

While a post is archived, it cannot collect new public engagement because nobody else can view it. If you restore it, its previous engagement returns with it and people can interact with the post again.

To hide one photo, video, or carousel from your Instagram profile:

  1. Open the Instagram app and tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Open the post you want to archive.
  3. Tap the three dots in the top-right corner of the post.
  4. Tap Archive.

The post should disappear from your profile immediately. Instagram may change the exact order of items in this menu, but the option is normally labeled Archive.

Be careful not to tap Delete. Archiving is designed to be reversible, whereas deleted content is eventually removed permanently.

How to archive an Instagram Reel

Section titled: How to archive an Instagram Reel

The menu for Reels can look slightly different from the menu for photo and carousel posts. To archive a Reel:

  1. Go to your Instagram profile.
  2. Open the Reel you want to hide.
  3. Tap the three dots.
  4. Tap Manage if Instagram displays that option.
  5. Tap Archive and confirm if asked.

Do not confuse Archive with Remove from profile grid.

  • Archive hides the Reel from your profile, including the Reels tab.
  • Remove from profile grid removes its preview from your main grid but can leave the Reel visible in your Reels tab and elsewhere on Instagram.

If your goal is only to tidy the visual layout of your main profile, removing the Reel from the profile grid may be enough. If you want the Reel to stop being publicly accessible from your account, archive it.

How to archive multiple Instagram posts at once

Archiving posts one at a time is manageable for a small cleanup. For a rebrand or a large account, use Instagram's bulk controls:

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
  2. Tap the menu button in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap Your activity.
  4. Select Photos and videos.
  5. Tap Posts.
  6. Tap Select in the top-right corner.
  7. Select every post you want to hide.
  8. Tap Archive at the bottom of the screen.
  9. Confirm that you want to archive the selected posts.

Instagram may also let you sort or filter your posts by date before selecting them. This is useful when you want to hide content from a particular campaign, year, or phase of your account.

Review the selected thumbnails before confirming. The same area of the app contains a delete option, and deleting a large batch by mistake is much more difficult to undo than archiving it.

Can you archive all Instagram posts at once?

Section titled: Can you archive all Instagram posts at once?

Some versions of Instagram display a Select all option in the bulk-management screen, while others require you to select posts manually. The controls can also vary by account type, device, and app version.

If Select all is available, use it carefully and confirm that the final action says Archive, not Delete. If it is not available, use date filters to reduce the number of posts you need to select at one time.

For very large profiles, work in smaller batches. This makes it easier to review your choices and reduces the chance of hiding content you intended to keep public.

Where to find archived Instagram posts

Section titled: Where to find archived Instagram posts

Archived posts are stored in a private area of your account:

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
  2. Tap the menu button in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap Archive.
  4. Open the selector at the top of the screen.
  5. Choose Posts archive if another archive is currently displayed.

Instagram uses the same section for several kinds of archived content, so you may initially see old Stories instead of feed posts. Switch from Stories archive to Posts archive to find posts you archived manually.

Your archive is private. Followers, collaborators, and other Instagram users cannot browse it.

How to unarchive an Instagram post

Section titled: How to unarchive an Instagram post

Instagram calls the restore action Show on profile rather than "unarchive." To restore a post:

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu button.
  2. Tap Archive.
  3. Select Posts archive at the top of the screen.
  4. Open the post you want to restore.
  5. Tap the three dots in the top-right corner.
  6. Tap Show on profile.
  7. Confirm the action if Instagram asks you to.

The post will reappear on your profile with its original caption, likes, comments, and publication date.

Where does an unarchived post appear?

Section titled: Where does an unarchived post appear?

An unarchived Instagram post returns to its original chronological position on your profile. It does not normally appear at the top of your grid as though you published it today.

For example, if you restore a post originally published between two posts from March 2024, it should return between those posts. This behavior preserves the order of your profile and prevents old content from looking like a new upload.

Restoring a post also does not send a notification to your followers. The post quietly becomes visible again. Someone may notice it while visiting your profile, but Instagram does not announce that you unarchived it.

Instagram's bulk-management tools are mainly designed to archive or delete public posts. The Posts archive commonly requires you to restore posts individually by opening each one and choosing Show on profile.

Because Instagram regularly changes its menus, check whether your version of the app offers a selection tool inside Posts archive. If it does not, you will need to unarchive each post separately.

This is worth considering before archiving hundreds of posts. Hiding a large batch can take only a few minutes, while restoring the entire batch may take considerably longer.

Archiving and deleting both remove a post from your public profile, but they are not the same action.

Feature Archive Delete
Visible on your profile No No
Visible to you Yes, in Posts archive Temporarily, in Recently deleted
Likes and comments preserved Yes Only while the post remains recoverable
Can be reversed Yes Only during Instagram's recovery period
Returns to its original grid position Yes Yes, if restored before permanent deletion
Best for Temporary hiding, profile cleanup, rebranding Content you intend to remove permanently

Deleted Instagram content usually moves to Recently deleted before it is permanently erased. That recovery window should not be treated as long-term storage. Once the window expires, the post and its engagement may be impossible to recover.

A simple rule is to archive first unless you are certain that the content should be permanently removed.

Archiving is useful whenever the decision to remove a post may not be permanent.

Rebranding your Instagram profile

Section titled: Rebranding your Instagram profile

Old posts may use outdated colors, messaging, logos, or product positioning. Archiving them lets you present a more consistent profile without destroying your account history.

Before hiding a large number of posts, preview the new layout with the free Instagram grid maker. It is easier to decide what should stay when you can see how the remaining posts work together.

Giveaways, limited-time offers, event announcements, and seasonal sales can confuse visitors after they end. Archive them once they are no longer current, then restore reusable seasonal content later if it becomes relevant again.

Temporarily removing sensitive content

Section titled: Temporarily removing sensitive content

You may need to hide a photo while resolving a permission, privacy, legal, or brand-safety concern. Archiving removes public access quickly while giving you time to decide whether permanent deletion is necessary.

If the content creates an urgent safety or privacy risk, however, do not rely on archiving as a substitute for taking the appropriate legal, reporting, or account-security steps.

Creators often archive a few posts to compare different profile layouts. Because the change is reversible, you can test a more focused grid and restore the posts if the result feels too empty.

A post may contain an old price, discontinued product, former team member, or broken call to action. You can archive it while you decide whether to update, replace, or permanently remove it.

Does archiving Instagram posts hurt engagement?

Section titled: Does archiving Instagram posts hurt engagement?

Instagram has not said that archiving a post directly penalizes an account. The immediate effect is simpler: a hidden post cannot generate views, likes, comments, profile visits, or conversions while it is archived.

Archiving a few outdated posts is unlikely to transform your account's overall reach in either direction. It may improve the experience for people who visit your profile, but it does not act as an engagement reset or a guaranteed way to influence the algorithm.

Do not archive every low-performing post just because its like count is disappointing. Older posts provide useful information about what your audience responded to, and a profile with only a handful of highly polished posts can sometimes look less established than a profile with a real publishing history.

For a business or creator account, record any important performance data before a major cleanup. Instagram may preserve historical insights, but keeping your own campaign notes makes long-term comparisons easier.

Why can't I archive or unarchive a post?

Section titled: Why can't I archive or unarchive a post?

If the Archive or Show on profile option is missing, try these fixes:

  1. Update Instagram. Install the latest version from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Check the correct menu. A Reel may place Archive under Manage, while a photo post may show it directly.
  3. Use the mobile app. Instagram's desktop experience does not always include every content-management option available on iOS and Android.
  4. Confirm you own the post. You cannot archive content published by another account.
  5. Switch archive types. If you only see Stories, choose Posts archive from the selector at the top.
  6. Restart the app. Close Instagram completely and reopen it.
  7. Try again later. Temporary account or server issues can cause menu items to disappear or actions to fail.

If a recently restored post is not where you expected, scroll back to its original publishing date. Unarchived posts do not usually move to the newest position in your grid.

Can followers see archived Instagram posts?

Section titled: Can followers see archived Instagram posts?

No. A post in your archive is visible only to you. Even people who previously liked or commented on it cannot open it while it is archived.

Does Instagram notify people when you archive a post?

Section titled: Does Instagram notify people when you archive a post?

No. Instagram does not send followers a notification when you archive a post.

Does Instagram notify people when you unarchive a post?

Section titled: Does Instagram notify people when you unarchive a post?

No. Restoring a post is also silent. It returns to your profile without being announced as a new post.

Do archived posts keep their likes and comments?

Section titled: Do archived posts keep their likes and comments?

Yes. Existing likes and comments are preserved and become publicly visible again when you restore the post.

Can you edit an archived Instagram post?

Section titled: Can you edit an archived Instagram post?

Instagram may allow you to edit details such as the caption, location, or tags from the archived post's menu. Available controls vary by post type and app version. If an edit option is missing, restore the post, make the change, and archive it again if necessary.

How long do posts stay in the Instagram archive?

Section titled: How long do posts stay in the Instagram archive?

Feed posts you archive manually remain there until you restore or delete them. They do not expire after 24 hours.

Is the Posts archive the same as the Stories archive?

Section titled: Is the Posts archive the same as the Stories archive?

No. Posts archive contains feed posts and Reels you chose to archive. Stories archive contains expired Stories saved by Instagram when Story archiving is enabled. Archived Stories can also be reused in Highlights.

Can you archive a carousel post?

Section titled: Can you archive a carousel post?

Yes. A carousel is archived as one post. All of its photos or videos, along with the caption, likes, and comments, stay together.

No. You can save another person's post to a private collection, but only the account that published a post can archive it.

  • Archive one post: Profile → Open post → Three dots → Archive
  • Archive one Reel: Open Reel → Three dots → Manage → Archive
  • Archive several posts: Profile → Menu → Your activity → Photos and videos → Posts → Select → Archive
  • Find archived posts: Profile → Menu → Archive → Posts archive
  • Unarchive a post: Posts archive → Open post → Three dots → Show on profile

Archiving gives you room to change your Instagram profile without making an irreversible decision. Use it for temporary cleanups, expired campaigns, and experiments with your grid; use deletion only when you genuinely want the content removed. When you are ready to publish fresh content again, a consistent schedule will do more for your profile than repeatedly hiding posts that underperform.
